Cowboy Up!

I think I have mentioned earlier this year that Grant's teacher this year is a real life COWBOY. He is a great man and a very good teacher. He is also a very WANTED teacher. One of the reasons every child wants to be in Mr. Prince's class is for his weekly ROPING TOURNAMENTS. This year Grant was lucky enough to be put in Mr. Prince's 5th grade class. For the first half of the year, Grant didn't really participate in the roping. So, I asked him one day why he wasn't roping with all of the other kids. He said it was really hard and he wasn't very good at it. I told him he probably just needed to practice a little more. You see, this is Mr. Prince's first year teaching 5th grade. Many of the kids in Grant's class had Mr. Prince the previous year for 4th grade. They had already been roping for a year. Grant said he wanted to try roping and that he would practice more.
He started bringing home their little practice bull and a rope on the weekends. Then he started participating in some of the tournaments. For Christmas we bought him a cowboy hat. At first he struggled, but soon began scoring 3's (a perfect score) more frequently. In the tournaments the kids are grouped into pairs. One person on the team does HEADING and the other person does HEELING. Heeling is the harder of the two. Grant got really good at heading, but his partner usually had a tough time with the heeling. I told Grant he should practice heeling. If he could get really good at the harder part, then whoever he was teamed up with for that week could have the easier part. So he practiced heeling, and got better and better.
This week, he and his partner WON! They each scored a 3 for a combined score of 6 and did it in 18.94 seconds. YAY Grant!

Love the hat. But he looks cute in his football hat too, so...

I love when teachers teach our kids unusual things. Allies teacher taught her to finger crochet and to quilt on a loom. Two things I could never have taught her to do.

Grant is so cute.

O.K. this is the third time I have tried to leave a comment and something has gone wrong with it. So here it goes again!

Way to go Grant. I'm so proud of him and that he kept practicing and practicing and that all his practicing paid off! That shows great character. I also wish that there were more teachers out there like his teacher that go over and beyond the call of duty!

Grant is also one handsome cowboy (and I've seen a lot of cowboys in my days:) I told Brilynn she needs to be extra nice to Uncle Brent and Aunt Kami so that someday they'll set her up on some dates with these cute Hyde boys:)
